Now a product from a company called L5 will help iPhones seize control of the home theater instead of the desktop. It’s called L5 Remote, and it has two components: a free app and a not-free hardware accessory. The accessory attaches to the iPhone’s USB port, then sends IR signals like most other universal remotes. It captures the signals sent out by your existing remotes so you can map them to buttons on the app. The cool part? The app lets you customize the interface by adding, deleting and moving around buttons to match your personal uses. The app will serve as a free trial. You’ll be able to download it and see all the cool things you can do, but it’ll be useless without the IR hardware, which will set you back $49.95. If you already have an iPhone or iPod touch, that’s probably cheaper than buying one of those dedicated touchscreen remotes. The L5 remote allows you to do a plethora of things that other remotes can’t even dream of. As well as customizing your own interface and setting up the remote UI however you would like.

Features of the device include:

  • Powerful enough to replace a coffee table full of remotes.
  • Drag and drop to design the remote you want.
  • Keep the buttons you use. Delete the ones you don’t.
  • Quick and easy setup.
  • Intuitive app for iPhone and iPod touch.
  • No batteries, no WiFi, no wall plug needed.
  • 100,000 button/1000 remote capacity.

The press release for the L5 describes a “short, guided training sequence” before you can begin using it with your home theater setup, which could be coded PR speak for a long and arduous process of holding your remote up to the IR blaster add-on for each command you want your iPhone to learn.
